Office of Veterans Services - manages 400 active files and successful in obtaining claim benefits for county veterans in excess of $4 million. Division of Facilities Management is responsible for over 60 county properties and 1.3 million square feet of office and public space. In 2007, more than 800,000 items were borrowed from the Atlantic County Library System. Approximately 9,000 new customers joined the library and over 20,000 residents participated in programs offered at its 10 branches. The Division of Public Health conducted approximately 1450 inspections of retail food establishments, including restraurants, schools, grocery stores, etc. in 2007. The Atlantic County Web site www.aclink.org receives an average of nearly 720,000 hits per month. In 2007, Home Delivered Meals program provided an average of 370 meals a day, five days a week; and an additional 257 frozen meals a week for use on weekends. The county telephone switchboard receives an average of 37,560 calls per month. An average of 100 dogs and cats are adopted from the Atlantic County Animal Shelter each month. An average of 80 animals per month receive free rabies vaccination provided by the Atlantic County Animal Shelter. The Office of Emergency Preparedness responded to a total of 68 incidents in 2007 related to law enforcement, traffic, fire, mass casualties, hazmat, air transportation, suspicious packages, etc. The Atlantic County Clerk's Office processed nearly 7,500 US Passport applications during the past year. The Atlantic County Division of Parks and Recreation hosted more than 5,000 campers throughout its facilities in 2007 and received over 400 reservations for birthday parties, weddings, family reunions and other get togethers. Additionally, many community events were held at the parks including five annual charity runs, several charity walks, the Pinelands Folk Festival, many fishing tournaments, a two-day power boat race, three antique boat shows, six regattas, K-9 adoption benefits and field trials. The Board of Chosen Freeholders reviews an average of 700 resolutions each year which it them considers for adoption. This does not include ordinances and bond ordinances. The Superintendent of Elections handled close to one million transactions during the past year which included voter registration applications, sample ballot address changes, party declaration forms, confirmation and verification of active voter registration rolls, bilingual registration issues and more. Atlantic County acquired more than 1,000 acres of open space in 2007 through its Open Space Financial Assistance Program and the Farmland Preservation Program and may be on track to accomplish nearly the same this year. The Department of Regional Planning and Development completed approximately one dozen road improvement projects last year accounting for a total of more than 30 miles of highway at a cost of a little more than $12 million. In an ongoing effort to keep the public informed of county programs and services, Atlantic County issues an average of 40 press releases a month which are distributed to nearly 40 media outlets, 1675 e-mail subscribers and posted to the county Web site under County News.
