PLOT SUMMARY:

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE was Gilbert and Sullivan’s follow-up production to their first huge success, H.M.S. PINAFORE. It was enormously popular at the time for its catchy tunes and silly plot, and has proved to be one of the most enduring of the G&S operettas.

Young Frederic has been at sea as a pirate apprentice since he was eight years old. Now of age, he is resolved to lead a blameless life, abandoning the pirate life and his well loved nursemaid, Ruth, in favor of Mabel, the lovely daughter of Major General Stanley.

When the pirate king discovers that the terms of indenture specify Frederick’s twenty first birthday, he goes to Tremorden Castle to bring Frederic , whose birthday is February 29th, back to the pirate life. Frederic, a "Slave to Duty," feels he must go with him.

Mabel, in a gallant attempt to bring to fruition Fredericks plans to exterminate the pirates, sends a band of policemen off to do the job.

Proposed Cabaret evening:

The Mikado

After the September 11th performance of The Pirates, we are considering a cabaret style singalong version of The Mikado, provided there is sufficient interest. This would follow the format of the cabarets at the late, great Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Philadelphia. Let us know what you think .
