National Senior Center Month

Senior Center MonthDid you know that across the country, nearly 11,000 senior centers serve 1 million older adults  each day, making them one of the most widely used services among America’s older adults.  Senior centers serve as a hub for older adults—connecting them to indispensable services that can help them stay healthy and independent.

September is National Senior Center Month and is a wonderful opportunity for the dynamic generation of older adults to get out and socialize.  According to the National Council on Aging, research shows that older adults who participate in senior center programs experience measurable improvements in their physical, social, spiritual, emotional, mental and economic well-being.

The “Car-Fit” program which is offered through the South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance will give adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicle “fits” them.  After information session there will be a FREE 12-point check on any senior’s car who wishes to participate.

Another fun and informational activity offered will be “Where does the Money Go” by the New Jersey Lottery.  There will be a brief question and answer period and some interesting stories about lottery jackpot winners.  There will be prize ticket drawing that will give some participants a chance win some premium promotional items.

New Jersey Fall Prevention Awareness week is September 24th through 28th and Atlantic County will be hosting Fall Prevention workshops and Balance Screenings to encourage seniors to take proactive approach to wellness by preventing falls. Falls are not inevitable and can be prevented.  Fox Rehabilitation and Visiting Angels Living Assistance Services will discuss with the seniors how home safety, exercise, medications, and certain chronic disease relate to falling and what seniors can do to help prevent a fall.  After the workshop free Balance Screenings will be offered at three of the senior centers for any older adult who wishes to participate.

This is also the time of year for older adults to consider their Medicare coverage.   Atlantic County ADRC will host a State Health Insurance Representative at several centers for “Your Medicare Matters” presentations.   The representative will review the upcoming dates for when to make Medicare plan changes, explain how making changes it is frequently possible to lower your Medicare costs and how to access your personnel Medicare information online.

Reservations are requested two days prior to attendance. Residents are also invited to stay for lunch. A $1 donation is suggested, but not required, to help enhance programming. Each senior center is open 9 AM to 2 PM, Monday through Friday. Click here for specific program locations and times.
