Atlantic County: A Great Place to Live Points of Additional Interest:Atlantic County Government offers a variety of events and community programs through various Departments. Accessible Beaches: City of Atlantic City: Atlantic City Beach Patrol Headquarters 609-347-5312 The NJ Department of the Public Advocate’s web site at “Reports and Publications” offers a statewide annual directory, “Guide to New Jersey Beaches”. The directory includes accessibility features such as access entry points and beach fees. For more information, call 609-826-5090 or e-mail: publicadvocate@advocate.state.nj.us. A number of towns with city operated beaches along lakes or bays also have surf chairs. Hamilton Township, www.townshipofhamilton.com, has a beach at Lake Lenape’s The Cove located at Park Beach Road in Mays Landing. Contact the Community Activities Department at City Hall 609-625-0370, Monday – Friday, for information or reservation of the surf chair.
Atlantic County Division of Parks and Recreation Most of the environmental and recreational programs are held at Estell Manor Park and Fox Nature Center. Estell Manor Park also has a low rise, boardwalk trail which is wheelchair accessible and traverses through the wetlands. The County oversees Klingerer's Fishing Pier, located adjacent to the Dolores Cooper Bridge (Longport Bridge). This pier is handicapped accessible. The newly acquired Camp Acagisca located at 6755 Weymouth Road (Rt. 559) is currently undergoing a complete renovation for handicapped access for overnight camping fun. Lake Lenape offers an easy access boating pier. For Camp Acagisca or Lake Lenape information call the Lake Lenape Reservation Office at 609-625-8219 or visit Boating on Lake Lenape. Atlantic County’s John F. Gaffney Green Tree Golf Course can provide a marker noting handicapped access to attach to a golf cart. For information, call the Pro Shop at 609-625-9131, http://greentree.aclink.org/ Atlantic County’s Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs develops cultural programs, exhibits and displays including the fine and performing arts and the literary arts, engages in historic research, publishes reports and engages in related activities which promote and develop public interest and understanding of historic and cultural matters. (908-637-4125). CLICK HERE to download the list. Historical Buildings: TransportationAccess Link is NJ TRANSIT's paratransit service required by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Access Link provides paratransit service comparable to the local bus service. This service is specifically for people whose disability prevents them from using the local fixed route bus service. To be eligible for this service, a person must live within ¾ of a mile of an established bus route and be certified by Access Link to use its service. To become certified, call 1-800-955-2321. (TTY-800-955-6765) Once certified, riders should call Access Link approximately 2 weeks before the event. Anyone certified by Access Link will be picked-up and transported to the location of the event. It is important to note, the location of the event must also be located adjacent to an established bus route. The fee is based on the number of bus zones the Access Link bus must travel. Other LINKS of Interest:Cultural Access Network of New Jersey is a one-stop shop for information about accessible venues, performances and cultural events throughout the State. In addition, the site provides a wide range of resources to assist the state’s cultural community in their efforts to reach out and better serve people with disabilities. Disabled Sports USA is an organization that offers nationwide sports rehabilitation programs to anyone with a permanent physical disability. Activities include winter skiing, water sports, summer and winter competitions, fitness and special sports events. Participants include those with visual impairments, amputations, spinal cord injury, dwarfism, multiple sclerosis, head injury, cerebral palsy, and other neuromuscular and orthopedic conditions. The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) has a variety of information on a wide range of topics. See a virtual tour of an accessible garden, an innovative universal designed fitness center, or read articles about nutrition. They also offer a free monthly publication. The site has an on-line directory of programs available for people with disabilities and health conditions. NCPAD’s overall mission is to help people with disabilities find accessible programs and their directory is a good starting point. The New Jersey Assistive Technology Advocacy Center (ATAC) There are many vendors on the internet selling adaptive recreation equipment, for example, Access to Recreation, Inc. http://www.accesstr.com , 1-800-634-4351. If you cannot locate an adaptive item via an internet search, the NJ Assistive Technology Advocacy Center (ATAC) (http://www.njpanda.org/atacprogram.htm) may be able to assist in locating a special device or piece of equipment. The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, Office of Recreation has an on-line directory of various recreational programs which have received funds from their Recreational Opportunities for Individuals with Disabilities (ROID) program. Visit http://www.state.nj.us/dca/dcr/rec/index.shtml and click on “NJ Recreation Resource Directory”. The United Spinal Association offers a member travel agency called “Able To Travel”. Able To Travel provides knowledgeable travel agents that have dealt with all types of issues a traveler using a wheelchair or who has limited mobility may encounter during his or her trip, including accessible transportation to and from the airport, stowage of wheelchairs or other mobility equipment on board an aircraft, accessible hotel accommodations, and access to medical equipment.
