Collaborative and shared services initiatives receive significant emphasis. The County Superintendent of Schools serves as a member of the Board of Education for Atlantic County Special Services School District, the Atlantic County Vocational School District and the Board of Trustees of Atlantic Cape Community College. Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station Cooperative Extension of Atlantic County 4-H Youth Development programs combine the experience of a broad range of enthusiastic volunteer leaders and the educational resources of Rutgers to provide productive opportunities for youth members to grow and learn about things that interest them. Over 400 youth are active in full time 4-H programs and more than 1100 additional young people participate in shorter special events. 4-H conducts active programming in such diverse locations as the Atlantic City Housing Authority and the Family Centers of Atlantic County, and innovative outreach, including new teacher training workshops to implement Character Education curriculum. Partnering with Job Connection/Youth Corps, a USDA Communities, Youth and Families at Risk (CYFAR) grant teaches Youth Corps members entrepreneurial skills by operating a youth farm stand in Atlantic City. Marine and Agricultural Agents provide direct assistance to fisherman and farmers, horticultural businesses and residents through a wide range of services including research and demonstration of improved production, management and marketing systems and techniques. Master Gardeners help extend RCE-AC outreach to residents by volunteering time to special projects in return for intensive horticultural training. Family and Community Health Sciences (FCHS) helps people stay healthy, enjoy life, be active, and reduce health care costs. Many of today's health problems—obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer—can be reduced through good nutrition and a healthy life style. Through its key initiative, Get Moving - Get Healthy New Jersey, FCHS encourages today's busy families and individuals to adopt a healthy lifestyle, especially healthy eating and physical activity. Educational programs, a website, publications and targeted marketing campaigns bring this award winning program to NJ residents. In Atlantic County our Get Moving Get Healthy New Jersey focus is on school wellness, family wellness, workplace wellness, and senior wellness. FCHS programs are designed to meet the needs of our residents where they live and work. The New Jersey Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) provides nutrition education to increase the food security of New Jersey’s limited-resource population, targeting adults, seniors, food stamp recipients and children in school systems with 50 percent or more students receiving free or reduced school lunches. SNAP-Ed community assistants teach participants to improve diets and nutritional welfare; increase knowledge of the essentials of human nutrition; increase the ability to select and buy food that satisfies nutritional needs; improve the practices in food production, preparation, storage, safety and sanitation; and increase the ability to manage food budgets and related resources such as food stamps.Workforce Investment
