Local History Grant Awards Announced

Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson has announced grant awards from $500 to $1,200 for local history organizations made available through a competitive application process coordinated by the Atlantic County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.

“Our local history organizations operate on very tight budgets but do immensely important work with regard to preservation and education,” noted Levinson.

The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey, Buena Vista Township, and the Greate Egg Harbor Historical Society, Egg Harbor Township, have both received funding to assist with the proper archival storage of materials in their collections. Egg Harbor Township recently received a large archive from the Scull family and the African American Heritage Museum is in receipt of materials from the estate of Hannah P. Lowe.

“It’s most important for the long term conservation of historic materials that they be properly stored. Acid free boxes, folders and other storage containers made specifically for this purpose can be quite costly. For this reason the organizations are very grateful for this funding from the NJ Historic Commission,” said June Sheridan, County Historian and co-chairman of the Atlantic County Cultural and Heritage Advisory Board.

Other award recipients include Absecon Lighthouse/Inlet Public Private Association, Atlantic City, which received grant funds to assist with special marketing of New Jersey’s tallest and fourth oldest lighthouse.
The Atlantic County Historical Society, Somers Point, received funds toward costs associated with the interviewing and the transcription of local veteran materials. The organization is an official partner and repository with the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress. To date more than 200 local veteran narratives have been collected and provided for listing on the Library of Congress Veterans History Project Web page.

The next round of applications will be for the grant period October 2012 – July 2013. Those applications will be available online www.aclink.org/culturalaffairs in June 2012.
