Pet Tips - Protecting Your Pet During the Holidays

Protecting your pet during the holidays.

The staff of the Atlantic County Animal Shelter urges all pet owners to protect their animals from potential hazards during the holiday season. Holiday foods and decorations can cause an unexpected trip to the veterinarian if curious pets are not watched carefully. Chocolate and candy contain chemicals including caffeine which can be toxic to dogs. Poultry skin and meats contain higher amounts of fats and protein than a pet's diet requires. Any interruption of a dog's consistent diet will increase the likelihood of gastrointestinal upset. Our pets are often attracted to ornaments and decorations, which if chewed or swallowed are considered dangerous substances. Tinsel and ribbons can be easily ingested and may create a need for the foreign body to be surgically removed. It is important to prevent your pet from drinking Christmas tree water as it contains bacteria, mold and fertilizers. The poinsettia is a common holiday plant that should be put out of a pet's reach. For a complete list of toxic plants visit www.apspca.org.

The holidays can create changes in our lives which may upset our pets. Please think ahead and plan accordingly so that your pet is not adversely affected by the festivities. Please contact the Atlantic County Animal Shelter at (609) 485-2345 for further information.
