| Atlantic County Reinvests Recovered Scrap Tire Cleanup Funds to Continue Removal Efforts at Second Abandoned Site |
| Atlantic County has obtained state approval to use $217,500 in recovered Scrap Tire Management Funds from a Mullica Township property owner to complete the removal of scrap tires from a second Mullica Township abandoned tire site.
"We requested the state's approval to reinvest the tire cleanup funds to remove yet another potential health hazard. Scrap tires promote mosquito breeding and the spread of West Nile Virus in addition to being a fire hazard," stated County Executive Dennis Levinson.
Atlantic County will now enter into an interlocal agreement with Mullica Township to use funds that the county recovered in January 2007 from Steven Waszen, owner of the former Perona Brothers junkyard on the White Horse Pike, to complete the removal of scrap tires from another abandoned site located on Columbia Road.
More than 2,100 tons of tires were previously removed from the Columbia Road property, but the $300,000 that was expended was not enough to complete the tire removal.
"Atlantic County's Law Department and Division of Public Health have persevered to recover these additional funds to help eliminate mosquito-breeding sites and protect the health and safety of our residents," said Levinson. "It is gratifying to know that their efforts will result in another cleanup completion and, ultimately and most importantly, the preservation of additional open space."
