The Atlantic County Division of Public Health works to control the spread contagious diseases in Atlantic County through education, counseling, screening and immunizations. Contagious Diseases - Certain infectious diseases such as salmonella, Measles, shigella and others must be reported to the Division of Public Health. Upon receipt of such reports, Public Health staff investigates the case or cases in order to control the spread of the disease in the community. To report an infectious disease, or if you have any questions about communicable diseases call 645-5933. Adult Flu Shots - Every Fall, the Division of Public Health offers adult flu shots to senior citizens and persons under a physician's care for certain chronic illnesses. Medicare is accepted. There is a small fee for non-Medicare clients. The shots are generally offered in at least 10 different sites throughout Atlantic County. For more information call 645-5869 or 645-5935. Immunizations - Immunizations are essential to protect children from many devastating diseases. But adults also need immunizations—the NJ Department of Health reports that over 40,000 adults die each year from diseases for which an immunization is available. Adult Vaccinations - In addition to seasonal flu shots, the Division of Public Health provides the following vaccinations for adults 50 years and older at no charge for residents without insurance and those whose insurance does not cover these vaccines. Click here for information. Tuberculosis - Screening and treatment are available at no cost. Certain eligibility requirements apply. Clinics are held at the Public Health Clinic at 201 Shore Road in Northfield. Call 645-5933 for an appointment. Family and close contact assessment and consultation, as well as Direct Observed Therapy (D.O.T.), when necessary, is available. Rabies - See "Rabies" under Environmental Health. Sexually Transmitted Disease - Screening, counseling and treatment is available for gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia. Confidential HIV/AIDS counseling and testing is also available. No cost. No appointment is necessary. The clinic is scheduled every Monday, except holidays, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 201 Shore Road (Stillwater Building) in Northfield.
