Air Pollution Program

Pursuant to the County Environmental Health Act (CEHA), the Environmental Health Unit inspects and investigates sources of air pollution. The State of New Jersey defines air pollution as follows:

“Air Pollution means the presence in the atmosphere of one or more air contaminants of any composition whatsoever, in such quantities and duration as are, or tend to be, injurious to human health or welfare, animal or plant life, or property, or would unreasonably interfere with the enjoyment of life or property within any portion of this State”.

The Environmental Health Unit inspects various facilities that are required to have an Air Pollution Control Permit issued by the New Jersey Department Of Environmental Protection. They include:

Minor Source Facilities

· Boilers
· Emergency Generators
· Wood Working Shops
· Gasoline Dispensing Facilities
· Auto Paint Shops
· Dry Cleaning Establishments

The Unit also investigates reports of air pollution received from the public and the NJDEP. These reports may include open burning and diesel vehicle idling. The Unit may also initiate enforcement actions that include issuance of penalties and signing court complaints.
