OFFICE OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS APPLICATIONS

The Department of Planning, in cooperation with the Atlantic County Division of Public Health, has been operating Geographic Information System (GIS) since 1991. The Atlantic County Office of GIS (ACOGIS) is responsible for promoting, assisting and coordinating the development of GIS technologies in Atlantic County. ACOGIS staff has utilized GIS in a variety of applications, including environmental and health issues, land use planning, emergency preparedness, district mapping, transportation maintenance and census data. The Atlantic County Office of GIS is one of four counties in the State of New Jersey, to participate in a pilot program with the New Jersey Office of Information Technology (NJOIT). The program will create Internet mapping applications for the county and its municipalities.

Quite often the ACOGIS contributes presentations at the Atlantic County Planning Summit, held yearly, as well as attending other conferences throughout the Mid Atlantic Region with state of the art displays.

OFFICE OF LAND ACQUISITION (Acquisition of Land for Open Space and Recreational Use)

Atlantic County is one of only a handful of New Jersey Counties to establish an Open Space Trust Fund for the acquisition of land and water areas for regional parks. Active farmlands have recently been added to the eligibility list for Trust funding. The County Park Acquisition Program is a model program throughout the state and is recognized by a variety of conservation foundations as an expeditious method for establishing regional parks and open space in order to improve the quality of life for area residents.

During the past several years, over $1 million has been set aside for land acquisition. Over 500 acres of land have been targeted for acquisition using the Open Space Trust Fund. In addition to responding to unique land offers or bargain sales, the County can utilize their funds to augment State Green Acres funds.
