Extract: This tool allows you to save data layers (or portions of layers), as separate shape files in the form of a downloadable zip file (*.zip), to your local PC. You are then able to use these shape files with your or your company’s GIS. A shape file is a collection of files that are native to the ESRI GIS software suite. You may download the free ArcExplorer software from ESRI http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/ to view any shape file that you choose to download. Within its collection, a shape file also contains a database file (*.dbf) that can be understood and imported by other database and spreadsheet software applications (for example: MS Excel/Access, Lotus 1-2-3/Approach, Corel Quattro-Pro). The size of the zip file that is to be downloaded is limited to four megabytes in size (4Mb).

Step 1: Select and load the desired map service (here we are using the ‘SmartGrowth’ service).

Step 2: Zoom in to your area of interest. Check the “Visible” box to include the data that you would like to view and download.
Step 3: Click on the Extract tool and observe the bottom frame change to this:
Step 4: Then Click the Extract button at the bottom of the page
Step 5: Click Download
Step 6: Save the zip file to your local hard drive and remember where you saved the file.
