Torres Appointed to ACCC Board of Trustees

Oakcrest High School guidance counselor Maria Torres has become the newest member of the Atlantic Cape Community College (ACCC) Board of Trustees following the approval of her appointment by the Atlantic County Board of Freeholders on Tuesday, December 9. Torres was nominated by County Executive Dennis Levinson. She succeeds former county executive Richard Squires whose term expired November 1, 2003.

According to Levinson, Torres' appointment reflects an interest in greater promotion of the college's programs and resources to local high school students. "Maria's familiarity with the needs and goals of the students will be a tremendous advantage as the college strives to strengthen its connection to the community," he said. "She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience."

Torres has been employed at Oakcrest High School for the past 23 years having served as a migrant tutor for three years prior to her current position as guidance counselor. She earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education and a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Inter American University in Puerto Rico. She has also earned master level credits at Temple University and Rutgers University.

In addition to her dedication to her profession, Torres contributes her time and talents to the Atlantic County Human Relations Advisory Council and the New Jersey Board of Higher Education. She has also served as a member of the Hispanic Alliance of Atlantic County and Oakcrest High School's Principal-Parent Advisory Committee and Human Relations Coalition.
