Community Partners Rehab Van to Join County Fleet of Specialized Emergency Services Vehicles
|
A 30-foot van that once served to provide residents with early detection of breast cancer will now aid in protecting residents during emergencies.
Atlantic County officially put into service a new homeland security support vehicle on Friday, January 11 with the capability to support law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical service and emergency management operations throughout the county.
"We are happy to continue the history of public service provided by this van, from fighting cancer to fighting terrorism," stated County Executive Dennis Levinson.
The 1986 Spartan Van, a former mobile mammography vehicle, was donated to the county by AtlantiCare. With federal homeland security funding and the developmental support of AtlantiCare, South Jersey Gas and Home Depot, the van was transformed to provide a mobile field operations office, equipped with distinct work areas, computers, data collection capabilities and intelligence gathering and analysis.
"Through a combined effort of government and private industry, Atlantic County has further enhanced its ability to protect our residents during a disaster with a customized mobile emergency services vehicle," added Levinson. "We are grateful to our community partners for their continued support of countywide coordinated emergency preparedness and response. When we work together, we work best."
South Jersey Gas contributed funding to assist in the rehabilitation of the vehicle while Home Depot donated materials necessary to complete space accommodations for the special operations area. Staff members of the county’s Office of Emergency Preparedness and Fleet Management unit assisted with basic construction and electronic installation.
Frank Sutton, Freeholder Vice Chairman, presented certificates of appreciation on behalf of the county executive to representatives from AtlantiCare, South Jersey Gas and Home Depot.
