Levinson Recognizes Buena Vista Twp. Resident for Volunteer Service

In recognition of the volunteer service of Julie Akers of Buena Vista Township, County Executive Dennis Levinson has declared Tuesday, August 2, 2005 as Julie Akers Day in Atlantic County. Levinson made the announcement at Gaskill Park in Mays Landing earlier today and presented Akers with a certificate. Akers is the 2005 recipient of the Governor's Volunteer Award for Long-Term Service, one of 11 annual statewide awards presented to outstanding volunteers for their selfless gifts of time, compassion and talent. She was nominated for this prestigious award by the Atlantic County Division of Parks and Recreation for which she has volunteered for the past 12 years.

Additionally, Akers is the key founder of the Great Egg Harbor Watershed Association and spearheaded the drive to have the Great Egg Harbor River included in the National Wild and Scenic River System in 1992. She currently serves as a member of the Atlantic County Parks and Environment Advisory Commission and remains involved with numerous environmental organizations.
