County Executive Dennis Levinson recognized recipients of the 2005 Public Health Partnership Award at a reception in their honor on Wednesday, April 20 at the Stillwater Building in Northfield. Presented each year in recognition of Public Health Week, the award honors community members or agencies that have made a significant contribution to the public health mission by promoting healthy living and healthy communities. This year's recipients included Atlantic Cape Community College, Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority and Dr. Albert Dearden.
"I commend your contributions to the health and well being of Atlantic County residents," stated Levinson. "You have exemplified the true meaning of partnership."
Both Atlantic Cape Community College and Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority are being recognized for offering their locations as mass clinic sites in the event of a public health emergency. They have spent countless hours working with public health staff and are an integral part of the planning and execution of the county's emergency preparedness plans.
"Their ongoing support and commitment to our community is invaluable," said Patricia Diamond, Atlantic County Health Officer.
Dr. Albert Dearden, a local pediatrician, was acknowledged for his contribution during the recent flu vaccine shortage. Dr. Dearden assisted the county in its efforts to provide flu vaccinations to high-risk populations. At a time when there was only a limited amount of vaccine available, Dr. Dearden offered his supply to immunize pregnant women and high-risk children who were not part of his private practice.
"Our community is healthier due to the efforts of Dr. Dearden," said Diamond. "This is a wonderful example of the private and public sectors working together to protect the public's health."
In addition to presenting the Partnership Awards, Levinson took the opportunity to applaud the efforts of public health staff. "We are fortunate in Atlantic County to have such dedicated public health professionals. Your efforts serve to enhance the health and safety of our residents and visitors."
The Division of Public Health offers many programs and services to the public including clinical, environmental, substance abuse, and information and education.
