County Offers Additional Archiving Workshops

Atlantic County announces two more "collections care" workshops developed under the auspices of the Philadelphia Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts and presented through the Atlantic County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs in partnership with the Atlantic County Historical Society. The sessions are open to the general public and are recommended for organizations or individuals involved in archiving historical materials.

"Of all the services that local historical societies perform, none is more important than preventing historical artifacts, documents, and photographs that provide a record of the past from being destroyed," said County Executive Dennis Levinson, "These workshops ensure that the societies have the proper knowledge and methods of preserving their collected materials."

"Housekeeping Basics for Museums & Cleaning of Library Book Stacks" will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 from 9:30 AM to 12:00 noon. This program will help institutions develop a housekeeping plan for various types of collections and will address proper cleaning supplies, recommended methods for cleaning, and staffing needs. Good and consistent housekeeping is the first defense for pest and insect control. Clean storage areas, exhibition areas and book stacks significantly aid in the long-term preservation of collections.

"Protection for the Light Sensitive: Care of Photographic Materials" will take place on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. This session will address mitigating the causes of damage to photographic materials. The selection of storage furniture and housing methods and materials, proper handling techniques, and environmental standards will be among the topics. Sample prints will be available for examination.

Both workshops will take place at the Atlantic County Historical Society located at 907 Shore Road, Somers Point, NJ. The deadline for registration is March 1, 2005. A nominal fee of $5.00 is being charged for each workshop and checks should be made payable to the Atlantic County Historical Society. Registration forms can be accessed online at www.aclink.org/culturalaffairs or by contacting the Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs at (609) 646-8699 ext. 6314 or by email: cmasonpurdie@acmail.aclink.org. This program has been made possible through funding from the NJ Historical Commission/Dept. of State.
