Levinson Announces Agreement with Margate for Drainage Improvements

County Executive Dennis Levinson has announced the approval of an interlocal agreement with the City of Margate for improvements to storm water drainage facilities along Monroe Avenue. The project is patterned after a previous interlocal agreement for similar improvements on Washington Avenue. Funding will be provided from a $10 million bond for regional transportation infrastructure improvements that was approved by the Board of Freeholders in September 2002.

The improvements are designed to alleviate a stormwater problem that impacts a four block area on Ventnor Avenue, from Coolidge to Jefferson. This area typically floods during heavy rainfalls and causes Ventnor Avenue and several municipal streets to be temporarily closed. The county and the city each own drainage systems in the area.

"We expect the same success from this project as was realized with the Washington Avenue improvements," stated Levinson. "By improving drainage and alleviating flooding we can enhance the safety of our residents and visitors."

Under the terms of the agreement, the county will reimburse the city a sum not to exceed $341,000. The sum represents 50 percent of the estimated project costs that include the engineering inspection, design and construction. The City of Margate will serve as the lead agency, responsible for awarding and administering the engineering and construction contracts.

"Atlantic County continues to look for cost-sharing projects such as these, that eliminate duplication of services and ensure coordination of efforts," concluded Levinson.
