Individuals interested in archiving historic materials are encouraged to attend a series of free workshops, entitled "Caring For Your Collections," sponsored by the Atlantic County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs in cooperation with the Atlantic County Historical Society. The series has been funded by the New Jersey Historical Commission.

The first session, "Archival Basics," will be held on Tuesday, November 9 from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM at the Atlantic County Historical Society, 907 Shore Road, Somers Point. Certified Archivist Beth Bensman will introduce beginners to the fundamentals of archival appraisal, acquisition and access. She will discuss common preservation problems and proper storage procedures. The workshop will provide the resources necessary to build a foundation of proper archival management. The deadline for registration is November 3.

The second session, "Controlling Pests," will be held on Wednesday, December 1 from 9:30 AM to 12:00 noon at the Atlantic County Library, 40 Farragut Avenue, Mays Landing.
Entomologist Dr. Thomas A. Parker will provide an introduction to integrated pest management for museums, libraries, archives and historic organizations. His discussion will include the importance of regular monitoring, documenting and non-chemical prevention in preserving collections and buildings threatened by mold, insects, birds, bats and rodents. The deadline for registration is November 24.
