County Executive Dennis Levinson has announced the award of a $1 million contract for the reconstruction of the intersection of Mill Road and Spruce Avenue in Egg Harbor Township. The project is scheduled to begin in late September and will involve the realignment of a dangerous curve and expansion of the width of the roadways to improve safety and increase capacity at all approaches to the intersection.
In announcing the contract, Levinson also forewarned the traveling public to anticipate traffic detours and consider taking alternate routes as necessary. "We will do our best to mitigate the impact of construction by utilizing alternative lane changes and other techniques wherever possible," he said, "but undoubtedly there will be some inconvenience to motorists."
Mill Road will be reconstructed for approximately 680 feet east and 995 feet west of the intersection, while Spruce Avenue will be reconstructed for approximately 1,150 feet south of the intersection. The county held a pre-construction meeting on August 27 to review the contract with the contractor, township officials and utility company representatives.
This is the first of two planned intersection improvements in Egg Harbor Township, one of the county's major growth areas. Construction at the intersection of English Creek Avenue and Delilah Road is expected to begin later this year. A public information session will be held on Wednesday, September 8 at 4 PM at the Egg Harbor Township Municipal Complex, 3515 Bargaintown Road to address questions and concerns regarding both intersection projects.
"As our population increases so do the demands on our infrastructure. These two projects are prime examples of our efforts to improve the safety of existing roadways to meet expanding needs," said Levinson.
The county executive also expressed his appreciation for the cooperation of the property owners affected by the widening of these intersections. "They understand that these improvements are in the public's best interest."
