County Executive Dennis Levinson has announced plans to publish a supplement to the county's military service publication, "Called to Duty: Recollections of Atlantic County Veterans" that features past and present residents who served in World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam. The original publication was initiated by Levinson in February 2000 and presented to the public in 2002.
According to Levinson the purpose of the supplement is to include additional entries related to those conflicts as well as entries from the current generation of military personnel fighting to preserve freedom in the war on terrorism and in the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The original "Called to Duty" publication was created to provide an educational and historical resource for local youth. As a former educator, Levinson was concerned that many young adults were uninformed about the sacrifices made by local veterans and the hardships they endured. Recent world events have renewed the nation's interest in those who serve on our behalf he said.
The supplement will be produced by several county employees in addition to their regular duties. "It is another way in which we can provide service to our community," noted Levinson. "And judging by the overwhelming response to the original book, Atlantic County recognizes the importance of documenting the contributions of our home town heroes for the benefit of future generations."
Those who are interested in contributing information may attain an application form on the county Web site at: www.aclink.org or by calling Karen Levin in the Office of Communications at 343-2195. The deadline for entries is December 31, 2004.
