County Awards Contract for Hammonton Intersection Improvements

On Tuesday, June 29, the Atlantic County Board of Freeholders unanimously approved a $278,888 contract for improvements to the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Third Street in Hammonton that includes replacing the existing traffic signal and accommodating wider turns. In addition, handicap ramps will be installed at each corner and new storm sewer pipes will be installed to improve drainage.

"Overall these improvements will improve the safety of both motorists and pedestrians," stated County Executive Dennis Levinson.

The contract was awarded to Asphalt Paving Systems of Hammonton as the low bid. Work is expected to begin in August and be completed in September.

According to County Engineer Joseph D'Abundo, alternating lanes of traffic will be in place during some periods of construction and a limited detour will be used as needed. However, local businesses will remain accessible. Because Third Street provides access to Hammonton High School, county officials are working with the Hammonton Board of Education to keep its members apprised of the project's progress.
