Tilton Road Drainage Project Nears Completion

The $2.5 million Tilton Road drainage project is entering its final phase, announced County Executive Dennis Levinson. The project, a high priority of Levinson's administration, includes the construction of a drainage basin and a piping system to alleviate severe flooding along Tilton Road in Northfield, one of the county's busiest roads and a primary evacuation route from the barrier islands to the mainland.

The drainage basin has been completed and the installation of drainage pipes along Tilton Road will be completed this month. Plans for the road's total width resurfacing are being finalized and bids are expected to be solicited in early May. The work will be performed in June, having allowed sufficient time for settlement and proper compacting.

Levinson stated that the new drainage basin's first test occurred on Christmas Eve when heavy rains fell during rush hour traffic. In the past this would have resulted in a temporary road closure, but the drainage system performed effectively and traffic continued uninterrupted.

"I am extremely pleased to report that this persistent problem will finally be resolved and that the safety of one of Atlantic County's most important arteries will be greatly improved," he concluded.

The project was made possible through joint funding grants between Atlantic County, the New Jersey Department of Environmental protection and the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
