County Offers More Surplus Computers for Auction

Twenty surplus Dell computers will be auctioned to the public on Monday, March 29 during a silent auction conducted by Atlantic County government. The auction will be held in the county's Shoreview building, 101 S. Shore Road, Northfield.

Each computer is equipped with a pentium CPU, a 17-inch monitor, Windows 95B, keyboard and mouse. They may be inspected beginning at 9:00 AM the day of the auction. The auction will begin at 10:00 AM and results will be announced at 11:00 AM. Buyers will be responsible for removing their purchases by 12:30 PM that day. Payment must be made in cash.

County Executive Dennis Levinson explained that the purpose of county auctions is to give the public an opportunity to purchase surplus county equipment at minimum cost.

Unlike some larger county auctions, this auction is limited to computers that are no longer powerful enough to function in a business environment. County officials held a similar auction in Atlantic City last December at which time 20 computers were purchased by the public at prices ranging from $36 to $100 each.

Based on the public response to that auction, county officials determined that there is an interest in purchasing such equipment. The county will continue to offer its surplus computers for auction as long as there is a need.

The computers were made available for auction because their Windows 95 operating systems are no longer supported by Microsoft. In order to maintain a viable business network, the county must maintain support for its operating system. In addition, the county must maintain network compatibility with state agencies and outside businesses which requires an updated operating system such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
