Low Cost Firewood Available at County Parks Beginning October 1

Beginning October 1, 2015, Atlantic County residents can take advantage of the Homeowners Firewood Program to obtain inexpensive firewood from designated county parks to supplement their own supplies.

"This program has been very popular, especially with residents who may be looking to save money on heating costs. It also benefits our parks with the removal of downed trees," noted County Executive Dennis Levinson.

Firewood permit applications can be obtained as of Monday, September 21 at two county park locations: Lake Lenape Boathouse, 6303 Old Harding Highway, Mays Landing, 7:30 AM to 5 PM; and the Estell Manor Park Nature Center, 109 Route 50, Mays Landing, 8 AM to 4 PM. Both sites are open seven days a week.

The cost of a permit is $25 per vehicle load, with a 1-2 load maximum, depending on vehicle size. Permits are non-transferable and valid only for the specific date listed. No rain dates. Cutting areas will be assigned upon obtaining a permit. Only dead, fallen trees may be harvested.

A vehicle load includes any truck or van up to a one-ton carrying capacity. Trailers are allowable up to a one-ton capacity as well. Loaded vehicles pulling a loaded trailer will be charged per item. Dump trucks and stake bodies are limited to a one-ton load of wood.

If firewood supply exceeds initial demand, there may be additional opportunities to obtain a maximum of three loads per individual, per calendar year.

The Atlantic County Homeowners Firewood Program will continue through March 31, 2016.
