Atlantic County Earns 16th Consecutive Perfect Audit

For the 16th consecutive year, Atlantic County government has received an error-free independent audit of its financial operations and procedures meeting the "highest level of audit" according to representatives of Mercadien, P.C., Certified Public Accountants of Princeton, New Jersey.

The 2014 audit did not find any weaknesses or significant deficiencies in its review of financial transactions of the county treasurer's office and the financial records of Atlantic County government offices and institutions.

"Despite our region's ongoing economic challenges, it should bring our taxpayers reassurance to know that at least county government remains fiscally prudent and continues to operate at the highest level of integrity," stated County Executive Dennis Levinson. "This is never an easy task, yet we live up to the high standards we have set for ourselves and what the taxpayer has come to expect."

"The auditors noted that Atlantic County continues to maintain a very low debt ratio," said Levinson. "This is far below the statutory debt limit. The future is not mortgaged for our children and grandchildren to pay our debts," he added.

The audit was conducted over a period of four months by Mercadien, one of four independent auditors to report no findings over the past 16 years. Atlantic County uses a competitive bidding process to select an auditor and changes firms every three years as per county policy.

"No county in New Jersey, or for that matter in the country, can match our performance," Levinson concluded.
