Installation of Osprey Nesting Platform at Lakes Creek Wetland Mitigation Bank

Twenty-one sixth-grade students from the Alder Avenue Middle School in Egg Harbor Township will assist in the installation of an Osprey Nesting Platform constructed by Fred Akers, Administrator of the Great Egg Harbor Watershed Association, at the Atlantic County Lakes Creek Wetland Mitigation Bank on Friday, June 12.

The Lakes Creek Wetland Mitigation Bank is the first government wetland mitigation bank in the tri-state area and winner of the 2013 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award, Healthy Ecosystems. Located on a 37-acre tract adjacent to Lakes Creek, the bank was created to offset the environmental impacts of infrastructure projects such as road and bridge repair. It includes three sections - a coastal wetlands area, a brackish water section, and a fresh water wetlands area.

The visit by the students will provide them an opportunity to put their lessons about the watershed and wetlands to practical use in identifying birds, surveying plants, and observing the tidal marsh.

The Lakes Creek Wetland Mitigation Bank is located on
Somers Point-Mays Landing Road in Egg Harbor Township near the intersection of Jeffers Landing Road.
