Enjoy the Gift of Good Health this Holiday Season

'Tis the gift-giving season. And what better gift than the gift of good health? One way to protect your health at this time of year is with a flu shot.

There is no shortage of flu vaccine supplies in Atlantic County, according to Public Health Officer Patricia Diamond. “The Division of Public Health continues to provide flu shots on a walk-in basis in Northfield and Hammonton for those 18 years and older. The cost is $15 but there is no out-of-pocket fee for Medicare Part B recipients who present their cards.”

Diamond noted that flu activity typically peaks between December and February but may last through May. New Jersey is presently experiencing moderate flu activity which is common for this time of year. There are several strains of influenza in circulation, not all of which the current vaccine is able to prevent.

“We highly recommend that our residents get a flu shot if they have not already done so. While it may not cover all strains of the virus, it still provides greater protection from getting the flu and may significantly reduce the severity of the virus if contracted.”

“During the holidays, we are more likely to gather in group settings, thus increasing the chances of spreading and catching germs,” she added. “It is especially important to practice preventative measures such as covering coughs and sneezes; washing hands frequently; avoid touching eyes, nose, mouth; avoid close contact with others when you’re sick; getting plenty of rest and fluids and eating nutritiously.”

Flu shots are available Monday through Friday, 9 AM - 12 noon at the Stillwater Building, 201 S. Shore Road, Northfield and on Tuesdays, 10 AM - 12 noon at 310 Bellevue Avenue in Hammonton. Appointments are not necessary. For more information, call (609) 645-5933, Monday - Friday.
