Planting Seeds for Community Needs

More than 1,000 pounds of garden-fresh vegetables grown by participants in the Atlantic County Department of Public Safety’s inmate work program were recently donated to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, Southern Branch.

Supervised inmates planted 12 vegetable gardens last May and were responsible for the care and maintenance of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and eggplants. Over 800 pounds of produce were harvested during the summer. An additional 220 pounds of cool-weather crops that included radishes and carrots, were produced in September and October. Bi-weekly deliveries were made to the Food Bank throughout the growing season.

“We are very pleased to have had an opportunity to use our resources to provide for the Community Food Bank,” stated Atlantic County Justice Facility Warden Geraldine Cohen. “The inmates assigned to the detail invested themselves in this project and took great pride in their accomplishments. This is yet another way in which we can help serve our community.”
