Atlantic County Animal Shelter Extends Reduced Feline Adoption Fees through July

Forty-six cats and kittens found new homes in June after being adopted from the Atlantic County Animal Shelter during its Adopt-A-Shelter Cat month reduced-adoption fee promotion.

But if you missed the opportunity to adopt a feline at 50% off the regular adoption fee, you're in luck. The reduced adoption fee promotion has been extended.

"The response was so positive that we have extended it through July 31," announced Kathy Kelsey, Atlantic County Animal Shelter Manager. "Not only did our feline adoption rate increase, but general interest in adoptions was also up."

"Our goal is to find loving homes for our shelter cats and dogs. We have such a wide variety of animals that there is usually something for everyone in terms of age, breed and temperament," added Kelsey.

Cats can live up to 20 years or longer which requires both a time and financial commitment. Potential owners should also consider their living situation and choose the type and age of cat that best suits their circumstances. Kittens are typically more active and require interactive play while adult cats are more sedate and may not require as much routine veterinary care as a younger feline.

Studies have shown that cats can add years to their owners' lives. The Minnesota Stroke Institute followed more than 4,000 cat owners over 10 years and found that owning a cat can dramatically reduce a person's chance of dying from heart disease. Specifically, 30 percent of cat owners were less likely to suffer a heart attack.

The Animal Shelter's discounted feline adoption fee of $42.50 includes mandatory sterilization, age appropriate vaccinations, diagnostic testing, a microchip and a free veterinary consultation. AVID chips and ID tags are also available for additional fees.

The public can view animals available for adoption online at www.aclink.org/animalshelter or in person at 240 Old Turnpike Road in Pleasantville, daily 1-4 PM, except on Tuesdays, 1-3 PM.
