County Expects to Award Fire & Mill Contract April 8

Atlantic County is prepared to award a contract for the reconfiguration of the Fire and Mill roads intersection in Egg Harbor Township at the April 8 Board of Chosen Freeholders regularly scheduled meeting.

The work includes the addition of traffic lanes to increase capacity and ease congestion at this heavily traveled intersection as well as pedestrian cross walks to enhance safety.

Two area bridges are being replaced in conjunction with the intersection project and will alternately serve as detour routes during intersection construction.

County Executive Dennis Levinson acknowledged the temporary inconvenience this will cause many motorists during the anticipated 18-month construction period.

“The intersection reconfiguration is much needed and long awaited. Anyone who has traveled in this area near 5 PM on a weekday is well aware of its current inadequacies,” said Levinson. “The detour routes we’ve identified will require additional travel time, but there are no good alternatives. That is why we have held two public information sessions and will continue to post information on our website as work progresses - to be sure that the traveling public is well aware of these projects and their designated detour routes.”

Work began in early March on the Maple Run Bridge on Mill Road between Northfield and Egg Harbor Township and is expected to be completed by the end of May. The 75-year old culvert is being replaced with a precast concrete arch bridge. A full detour will remain in place through its completion. Traffic on Mill Road is now being diverted to Zion Road.

Replacement of Cedar Bridge on Zion Road which connects Linwood, Northfield and Egg Harbor Township is scheduled to begin in the fall and be completed in six months. During construction traffic will be detoured to Mill Road.

Maps of the planned detour routes are available on the county web site at www.aclink.org/planning along with additional details about each of these projects.
