Storm Update - 2 PM, October 31
Atlantic County has received a federal declaration for public and individual assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as of October 30. Residents and businesses may now apply for uninsured or underinsured losses from Hurricane/Tropical Storm Sandy. Applications are available online at www.fema.gov or by calling customer service at 1-800-621-3662.
Atlantic County and local emergency management officials are working to finalize a re-entry plan for the barrier island communities of Brigantine, Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate and Longport. Approximately 65,000 Atlantic City Electric customers remain without power throughout Atlantic County and numerous homes sustained flooding and other storm damage. Officials cannot give the all clear until they can ensure that towns are safe and homes are inhabitable. AT THIS TIME access to the barrier islands is restricted.
Ventnor residents will not be able to return to the city until such time that the sewer system is operating at full capacity. According to Ventnor officials, the system sustained flooding and filled with saltwater. Residents who have any questions may contact city hall at (609) 823-7900.
County officials are also working to help people currently housed in Red Cross shelters return to their communities.
Residents in need of assistance should first call their local office of emergency management. Contact numbers are available in the phone book and online at www.ReadyAtlantic.org.
