Volunteers Are Making A Difference in Reducing Recidivism
The Atlantic County Department of Public Safety will honor more than 300 volunteers and staff from 35 support agencies for their efforts to help reduce recidivism among inmates discharged from the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Former Governor Jim McGreevey will address those in attendance on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at 12 noon at the Atlantic County Institute of Technology, 5080 Atlantic Avenue, Mays Landing.
McGreevey was recently appointed to the New Jersey Task Force on Heroin and Other Opiate Use and will discuss his experiences working with previously incarcerated individuals at Exodus Transitional Ministry in Harlem, NYC and his current work with the Hudson County Correctional Center to help discharged inmates secure mentoring, maintain a commitment to recovery from substance abuse and successfully reintegrate into society.
The Atlantic County Department of Public Safety implemented a discharge planning program in February 2005 to address the escalating number of repeat offenders. The program connects inmates with community-based agencies that provide resources, including treatment for mental illness and drug addictions, to support their return to their families and their communities.
