Public Invited to 24-Hour Ham Radio Exercise, June 23-24
Amateur ham radio operators will participate in a 24-hour radio communications emergency exercise from 2 PM on Saturday, June 23 to 2 PM on Sunday, June 24 at the Anthony "Tony" Canale Training Center in Egg Harbor Township.
Held in cooperation with the Southern Counties Amateur Radio Association and various municipal emergency management offices, the exercise will coincide with national Field Day, an annual event where approximately 35,000 amateur ham radio operators from around the country set up radio communications equipment under emergency conditions and attempt to make as many radio contacts as possible within a 24-hour period.
“Ham radio operators play an important role in emergency communications. In the past two years they have supported emergency management efforts during Hurricane Katrina, various wildfires and tornadoes and Tropical Storm Irene,” stated County Executive Dennis Levinson.
The exercise will feature some of the newest technology employed by ham radio operators including digital and satellite communications, the Internet and voice communications in addition to traditional Morse Code.
The Field Day exercise is open to the public at no charge and will be conducted in the parking lot behind the Canale Training Center, 5033 English Creek Avenue, Egg Harbor Township.
