Adding Life to Our Years
Since 1963 communities across the nation have joined in the annual commemoration of May as Older Americans Month. This year's theme, "Never Too Old to Play," celebrates the value that older adults add to our lives as well as the health benefits of remaining active throughout our lives.
The Atlantic County Division of Intergenerational Services invites the public to join in the fun by visiting any of the county's nine senior centers and to participate in one of the special activities provided this month that will include a virtual walk from Charleston, S.C. to Key West, an indoor carnival, intergenerational bingo, a martial arts class, a creative arts class and a diabetes seminar.
"While Atlantic County provides services, support and resources to its senior residents all year round, Older Americans Month is a great opportunity to honor these important members of our community," said Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson.
Growing numbers of people over the age of 60 are participating in community service, volunteerism, online social networking and arts and recreation programs. Such activities help retain mobility, muscle mass and cognitive abilities.
Studies show that social interactions with family, friends and neighbors across generations enrich the lives of all involved. Young people who have significant relationships with a grandparent or elder report that those relationships help shape their values, goals and life choices and provide them with a sense of identity.
The Atlantic County senior centers are open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 2 PM, and provide daily activities as well as a complimentary lunch time meal. Seniors age 60 and older are asked to make reservations for lunch at least two days in advance of attendance by calling the location of their choice.
