Atlantic County Sheriff's Office and Local Law Enforcement Team Up for Food Drive
Sheriff Frank Balles is announcing a week-long joint Food Drive to begin on Monday, December 14, 2009 and culminate on Monday, December 21, 2009. The drive is in honor of Sheriff’s Association of New Jersey (SANJ) member Sheriff Kim Guadagno who has been elected Lt. Governor of New Jersey. At the most recent SANJ meeting, Sheriff Guadagno announced that this year there will be no inaugural ball; instead a dinner will be held with half the cost of each ticket to be donated to the local food bank. It is in this spirit of giving back, that the Sheriff’s Association of New Jersey and the U.S. Marshal Service have decided to work together to donate to those in need.
Sheriff Balles has pledged his agency’s participation by placing receptacles in each of the two county courthouses. Once the food drive has been completed, the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office will donate the food collected to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, Southern Branch located on the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township.
Sheriff Balles stated, “This is a very tough time for a lot of families. We just thought that this would be a great opportunity to close out the year with a positive impact.”
Right now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. We all know and are in contact with people who are affected by hunger, even though we might not be aware of their circumstances. For one in eight Americans, hunger is a day to day reality. Although there is the belief that the problem is confined to small areas of society, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods, that is far from the truth. Those suffering from hunger are often hardworking adults, children and seniors who simply cannot afford the cost of living and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days.
For those individuals in need of food, we urge you to donate what you can. And we wish everyone a very happy holiday season.
