Rabies Confirmed in Mullica Township Cat

Atlantic County health officials have received confirmation that a cat owned by residents living on Garden Alley in Mullica Township has tested positive for rabies. This is the second case of rabies in Mullica Township this year. The previous case involved a raccoon collected from a South Carolina Avenue property.

The outdoor cat appeared sick and its owners found a wound on its rear leg. The cat was taken to its veterinarian on October 14 where it exhibited signs of rabies and was euthanized and sent to the state lab for testing. Results were confirmed on October 19.

An investigation by county health officials indicates that one of the homeowner’s had been scratched by the cat and has been advised to speak to a physician regarding rabies post exposure treatment. The homeowner’s other two indoor cats and two dogs did not come into contact with the rabid cat but will be placed under a 45-day confinement as a precautionary measure.

Residents are reminded that anyone who has been bitten, scratched or exposed to a wild animal or pet that has taken ill or is behaving strangely should seek immediate medical attention and report the exposure to the Atlantic County Division of Public Health by calling 609-645-5971.

Health officials also remind residents about the importance of vaccinating their pets. The Atlantic County Animal Shelter offers a free rabies vaccination clinic to residents each month at 240 Old Turnpike Road, Pleasantville.
